Various systems in yarn count in Direct & Indirect System

Unit in Direct System:

In direct system the lower the count, the finer the fiber will be. In this system units are (units of fineness) Tex, Denier, Pounds per spindle etc. This is used for man-made fibers, jute, silk etc. Here, the length is fixed.

Tex System:

In direct system Tex is an internationally recommended unit used in expressing fineness. Tex indicates the weight of yarn in grams of 1000 meter/1km of yarn. Normally, 10Tex expressed that "The weight of 1000m yarn is 10gm." In Tex system the length 1000 m is fixed but weight is variable. And this variable number will be the count/number of the yarn.

Denier:

Denier expresses the weight in gram of 9000m/9km of yarn. 5 Denier is expressed that "The weight of 1000m yarn is 10gm." So 9000m is fixed and weight in gm. is variable.

Pounds Per Spyndle:

This unit is used for expressing the fineness of hemp, jute, wool etc. (normally bast fibre). In direct system pounds per spyndle expresses the weight in pounds of 14400 yards of yarn.

Unit in Indirect System:

In indirect system the higher the count, the finer the fibre/yarn will be the units of indirect system are cotton (British)/ English, metric, worsted etc. In this system, the length is fixed.

Cotton (British) count/English count(Ne):

In indirect system cotton/English count means"The number of hank in 1 pound yarn"; where 1hank is equal to 840yds. For example, if one pound yarn contains 20 hanks of 840 yards, in English system count will be 20 Ne. Cotton is denoted by Ne.

Metric Count (Nm):

Metric is defined as "the length of 1000m/1km yarn is 1000gm/1km." In other words metric means "the number of hank per kilogram;" whereas 1hank is equal to 1000m/1km. For example, if 1kg yarn contains 10 hanks of 1km, in metric system count will be 10 Nm. Metric count is denoted by Nm.

Worsted:

Worsted count is widely used for worsted yarn. It can be defined as the number of hank per pound. For example, if 1pound yarn contains 10 hanks of 1km, in metric system count will be 10 Nm. Metric count is denoted by Nw.
