Over the past few years, most of the textile industries have been paying attention towards textile testing. They have understood the benefits and importance of the method and wants to assure that they will deliver their customers with the best items.

Textile testing has been protecting the individuals from making any costly mistakes. It helps them to select the best quality items so they can produce quality products. However, there are still many textile industries that do not understand the importance of textile testing. To clear your doubts here we have everything you need to know about this technology.

The significance of textile testing

1.Fire Testing

Fire is of great significance to human living and production. Nevertheless, there is not only bringing lights to us, but also disaster, even take the life. The main reason why fire disaster happens is that there is a great amount of combustible materials we used, especially textile material in our living and working environment, which leads a high fire risk. Statistically, more than half of the fires due to the textile lacks flame resistance. In order to reduce the fires and assure the safety of people, various countries attach great importance to flame-proof treatment, flame retarding technology, new flame-proof product development, flame-retard textile application and the standards and test of flame-proof treatment
For instance, Flame Retardant Protective clothing plays an important role in the field of labor protection. The flame resistance of the materials for clothing is the ability to prevent or slow the further development of the ignition, and the ability to extinguish or smolder when it leaves the ignition. The universal flame retardant indexes we used are after-flame time, smoldering time, damaged length and limited oxygen index. Under trail conditions, after-flame time is the time of the flame combustion of the material when it leave the ignition, and smoldering time is the time of the glowing materials when they leave the ignition or the flame combustion ends. The damaged length is the maximum distance of the damaged area, and the limited oxygen index is the lowest percentage of oxygen in volume of the materials to keep burning in Nitrox. There are two universal flame retardant test methods, which are respectively vertical flammability test and LOI (Limited Oxygen Index).

Horizontal Flammability Tester

Horizontal Flammability Tester is used to test the clothing fabric, decorative fabric, tent fabric, and so forth, which must reach flame retardant requirement. Furthermore, this tester also apply to rubber, plastics and other materials.

2.Fastness Testing

Our clothing is inevitable to rub with other objectives, sometimes even in wet rubbing. If the dye fastness is not good enough, it will be contaminated by other objectives. That is the reason why set up requirements of color fastness to rubbing, which means the color fastness of textiles to dry or wet rubbing. In the course of the friction, the textile will be only stained, not discolored.

Crockmeter

Crockmeter is used to determine the colour fastness of textiles to dry or wet rubbing.

3.Abrasion & Pilling testing

The abrasion resistance of materials for clothing is the ability to prevent damage from abrasion. During wear, clothing always keeps friction with contact object such as outerwear and tables or chairs friction, underwear and skin or outerwear friction, work clothes and machine friction, etc. Practice indicates the durability of clothing depends on the abrasion resistance of fabric. Therefore, the abrasion test of fabric is significant in assessing the abrasive resistance of fabric.
Based on the situation, thanks to different wears mode of different parts, there are various types of tester, which falls into five major categories: surface abrasion, flex abrasion, fold abrasion, dynamic abrasion and rolling abrasion. The sample of surface abrasion is on the plane surface which simulates the wear of the elbow, hip and sole of the clothing. The flex abrasion test is to determine to the abrasion resistance of the fabric in reverse bending, which simulate the abrasion of the part of knee and elbow. The fold abrasion test is to determine to the abrasion resistance of the edge of the fold of fabric, which simulates the abrasion of collar and cuff. The dynamic abrasion test is to determine to the wear form of the sample in repeat tensile and rubbing when the sample with bent position. The rolling abrasion test is to determine the ware form of tensile, bend, compress and strike. The experimental condition of testers is different and their experimental results can't be replaced each other.

Marindale Abrasion Tester

Marindale Abrasion Tester is to determine the abrasion and pilling resistance of all kinds of textile, such as knitted fabric, wool fabric, artificial leather and synthetic leather and so forth.

Reasons to tests products

☀ To check the specifications of the products like whether it meets the military standards or not
☀ Quality promotion
☀ Quality control
☀ It should adhere to regulations of EPA, FDA and other governmental policies
☀ Performing failure analysis
☀ Comparative product evaluation
☀ Research
☀ Development of new product

Tips for selecting textile testing methods

There are different types of textile testing methods available in the market and selection of the best one is not an easy task. you have to assure that the method you have selected is in accordance with the material of the product. Here are 7 tips to help you select the best methodology.
1. Consider the essential characteristics of the products like comfort, strength, durability, and appearance
2. Know where your items will be used and who is your target market
3. Comparing to the existing data you have to test all the products
4. Develop a database
5. Communication with customers and suppliers is important
6. Make sure whether you want to follow the international or national standards
7. You should know what would be your claim for the product to attract more customers.
